Oh No Ross and Carrie – Podcast Review

In This episode I talked about the podcast Oh No Ross and Carrie, a real institution when it comes to pseudoscience skepticism podcasts. The show is never stuffy and snooty though, it’s full of laughs, jokes, and aims to make you smile.

PodApplaud- Oh No Ross And Carrie

Welcome to PodApplaud, the Monday and Friday podcast that aims to enable your Podcast habit. I’m your host Seb, and today we are going to give in into our curious side with the podcast: Oh No Ross And Carrie.

Oh No Ross And Carrie is an experimental podcast in which a duo of open minded skeptics go all in on the very things they’re skeptical about. That duo of course is Ross and Carrie, together they have put out over 300 episodes each installment is about an hour long, but some topics or episodes are broken up over multiple uploads. The show doesn’t always have a set schedule or presentation, but still puts up about 4 episodes a month.

I first heard about oh No Ross and Carrie from The Maximum Fun Network since I have listened to many Maximum Fun shows and checked out their website. You can also get glimpses of the show topping various podcast charts. The show is a brilliant idea and I dare say Ross and Carrie were the first to pull it off, the show has been emulated by others but never truly replicated. The chemistry between Ross and Carrie is amazing, they have such a care-free and humorous back and forth. They sling jokes, puns, and wordplay constantly laughing throughout the whole show. It’s very easy to become sucked in and listen for a long time since the show feels like you are amongst a couple of friends.

The real fun of the show is hinged upon Ross and Carrie going out and participating in all these fringe things the general population keeps at arms length. Every episode they deliver on their tagline: We show up so you don’t have to. So what exactly are they showing up to? Well they have spent time within the church of scientology, they have participated in flat earth debates, firewalking, laughter Yoga, and Ufo Seminars. They have also visited Salt Caves, Haunted Houses, and faith healers. Although some of these things can be absurd or dangerous Ross and Carrie always seem to show up with a sparkling attitude. You can tell they disagree greatly or may even be offended by a practice but they still show up smiling and laughing. Afterwards they somehow come out of every situation with a light heart and less contempt for the pushers of pseudoscience than one might expect.

The basic format of the show is that the duo sit down and run through every bit of the experience at hand point by point. They discuss their notes, anything they may have personally experienced, or witnessed and any discussions they may have had with other participants who more devotely believe in these odd practices. We get to hear what the practitioners says and how they behave. I’m constantly impressed but all the little details these two remember or take notes of. Each episode feels like a genuine in depth experience of what it is like to go to the Hypnosis Motivation Institute or get their auras analyzed. Sometimes there can be little on the scene snippets of recording included as well depending on the episode. I especially like when then do talks or friendly debates with people, those episodes usually crack me up.

Here on PodApplaud I rate shows on a 1-5 scale, 1 is silence, 2 is a slow clap, 3 is applause, 4 is a round of applause, and 5 of course is a standing ovation! I’d give Oh No Ross And Carrie a ⅘, a round of applause. I enjoy the show a lot and it has given me many good laughs. Personally I feel like I need to be invested in an episode to get the most out of it. Topics that intrigue me I go all in on, but I find my mind wandering when I listen to some episodes. I’m going to stay subscribed and check out episodes that seem up my alley, but might not catch every upload. I’d recommend Oh No Ross and Carrie to anyone who is sceptical of yet interested in pseudoscience,  who enjoys seeing bad science or ideas dismantled in a calm, funny, and wholesome way.
