PodApplaud- That’s Weird
Welcome to PodApplaud, the Monday through Friday podcast that aims to enable your Podcast habit. I’m your host Seb, and today we are going to make it weird with Podcast: That’s Weird.
That’s Weird is a friendly chat show that revels in talking about anything bizarre and off-kilter. There is currently a juicy backlog of 80 episodes that you can get in on if you are so inclined. These episodes range from around half an hour to 45 minutes. Some episodes have broken the hour mark as well, but that is an infrequent occurrence.
I was first drawn to this podcast due to the super rad cover art. After that I clicked in and saw the subject matter was anything from, Alien Hand Syndrome to Octopus Wrestling so I subscribed and cherry picked out some episodes that caught my attention. What I like about the show is that each of hosts, both Ashley and Kristi bring a topic to talk about every episode. So every episode you are getting two weird things to learn about. Oftentimes the coverage can be a bit shallow, such as single sources or article being enough to fuel the entire discussion. They are capable of this because the two hosts are very personable and spend at least a quarter of the show bantering back and forth cracking jokes. This is a genre or style of show that we see a lot and it is popular because it helps the listener grow close to the podcasters who are putting so much of their personality out there. As far as I can tell, That’s Weird feels likes the My Favorite Murder of weird stuff, which to a lot of people is a huge compliment. I’m not particularly fond of this type of show, but I get it, and I’m not here to say entire approaches to running a show are bad. In fact I think these ladies do a pretty good job on their show. I’ve searched some the topics they covered into listennotes and there’s been a respectable number of topics here that you might not find covered many other places. The audio is consistent and clear and well balanced even when they started doing the show apart from each other. The ladies are genuinely funny, but sometimes the laughs have that Jimmy Fallon vibe were people can confuse it as disingenuous and not be not sure if is real giggly exuberant energy. It is a whole phenomenon, there is an excellent Youtube video on it by Youtuber Charisma On Command. Part of it is beginning a laugh before the joke has really landed and part of it is the ability to cut a laugh short. I would attribute this to the closeness of the hosts, but it was hard to get used to until I understood the dynamic better after more episodes. I hold fast that some of the topics could be far more researched however. Sure if you are doing a really out there topic maybe only one article is available, but I heard in multiple episodes the hosts refer to being underprepared or missing their notes. I recently talked about American Hysteria and how an episode of that show on any topic feels like the definitive episode of the topic. That’s Weird feels like the cliff notes of any give topic. You come for the weird and you stay for Ashley and Kristy. If you’re like me you can appreciate the hosts chemistry and entertainment value, but you really wanted to know some more about any given topic.
Here on PodApplaud I rate shows on a 1-5 scale, 1 is silence, 2 is a slow clap, 3 is applause, 4 is a round of applause, and 5 of course is a standing ovation! I’d give That’s Weird a ⅗ I respect the hosts and their show, I just prefer less chat and more topic coverage. These ladies have some good chat and The MFM of Weird stuff is not a bad idea for a shirt design, or a bad review take-away. I personally won’t be exploring this show more. I would recommend this show to anyone who likes oddities of any origin and likes to feel as if they are right in the middle of the conversation.
That’s been the show for today, I hope you found it valuable If you wish to reach out or follow me, you can find me on twitter @podapplaud or send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org Thank you for listening, and please tune in again.
