In this Episode I talked about my experience with Haley Broden’s show Outrageously Unnecessary. The show was ongoing but relatively new, it had not even crested 10 episodes at the time of review. The show dishes about the wild things people with too much money buy up.
Welcome to PodApplaud, the Monday through Friday podcast that aims to enable your Podcast habit. I’m your host Seb, and today we are going to talk about The Podcast: Outrageously Unnecessary.
Outrageously Unnecessary is a conversational podcast that examines the spending habits of the wealthy throughout history. The show’s main host is Haley who is joined often either by Stephen or Kayde, there have been other guest co-hosts in the mix as well. There are currently 9 episodes which are for the most part an hour long.
In the about section for the podcast it mentions, “As long as there has been wealthy people, they’ve been buying obnoxious crap”. That obnoxious crap is exactly what the team behind Outrageously Unnecessary aim to poke fun at. Every episode each host comes to the table prepared with research and dirt on loaded loonies and their extravagant expenditures. Often there is an idea or theme behind each hosts selection of topics, such as delicacies or the spending habits of big lotto winners. Going into the show I thought this was such a novel idea, I had never seen a podcast idea quite like this one. It is just so relatable, we all have rolled our eyes at how some people can live jewel encrusted lives. Laughing at these rich schmucks is such a cathartic experience.
As for the hosts, they all have really great chemistry together and play of each other very well. Each episode is filled with laughs and anticipation as they go back and forth revealing the next unbelievable bit of financial foolery. That joy they are feeling as they swap stories transfers right into the listener. Sometimes the show can even be kind of educational, such as when they talk about the spending of monarchs or royalty of the past. For example, I learned a lot more about King Henry The 8th than just his deplorable three-way love affair between his wives and the business end of a guillotine.
Turns out I gave a smaller off the beaten path podcast a chance and I was really happy that I did so. I hope others will check out the show too, maybe inspire the crew to have a more consistent upload schedule. I don’t have many nits to pick here, the show tends to cover any place I might poke holes, they even have an instagram post for each episode that includes any images they talk about on the show so you can see exactly what it is they are sharing with each other. The titles to episodes are usually funny out of context quotes, but you can easily read the episode description to get a solid feel as to what the hosts will be talking about. I guess I’ll just get to the rating.
Ok so here on PodApplaud I rate shows on a 1-5 scale, 1 is silence, 2 is a slow clap, 3 is applause, 4 is a round of applause, and 5 of course is a standing ovation! I’m going to give Outrageously Unnecessary a standing ovation, 5 out of 5, this is a small independant show that sounds great and is entertaining all while they have not even hit the double digits when it comes to episode count. Not to mention, I have not really seen this idea done before, and there is definitely no lack of content going into the future.
So that’s been the show for today I hope you found it valuable If you wish to reach out to me you can find me on twitter @podapplaud or send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org Thank you for listening, and please tune in again.
